Adrienne Pine: 40 Honduran scholars, supported by 300 academics from 29 countries, sent a letter to President Obama demanding the end of U.S. support for Honduran military and police training—and that the war on drugs is not a rationale for supporting a regime that is violently suppressing its own people.

DemocracyNow.org – Journalist Seymour Hersh has revealed that the Bush administration secretly trained an Iranian opposition group on the State Department’s list of foreign terrorists. Hersh reports the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command trained operatives from Mujahideen-e-Khalq, or MEK, at a secret site in Nevada beginning in 2005. According to Hersh, MEK members were trained in intercepting communications, cryptography, weaponry and small unit tactics at the Nevada site up until President Obama took office. The MEK has been listed as a foreign terrorist groups since 1997 and is linked to a number of attacks, spanning from the murders of six U.S. citizens in the 1970s to the recent wave of assassinations targeting Iranian nuclear scientists. Hersh also discusses the role of Israeli intelligence and notes the Obama administration knew about the training, “because they have access to what was going on in the previous administration in this area, in terms of the MEK, in terms of operations inside Iran.” His new report for The New Yorker blog, “Our Men in Iran?,” comes as nuclear talks are set to resume this week between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Workers, students and activists have held a month-long general strike in Honduras to protest repression by the government of President Porfirio Lobo. Lobo came to power following elections under the regime of Roberto Micheletti, who seized power in a violent military coup against democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya in June 2009. Honduras is one of the world’s most violent countries, with a homicide rate four times higher than in Mexico, according to national statistics. In 2010, Honduras became the most dangerous country in the world for journalists, with this March being the deadliest month on record.
We speak to Gerardo Torres, an independent journalist and a leading member of the National Front of Popular Resistance in Honduras. [includes rush transcript]

Wednesday was a national day of action in Honduras as teachers, students, and members of the National People’s Resistance Front took part in a third week of actions against the privatization of education. Students of the National Autonomous University in the capital of Tegucigalpa occupied the campus and the surrounding streets. They were then attacked by riot squads launching tear gas and rocks, and by two tanks that fire water mixed with pepper spray. The police entered the campus grounds from a back entrance before being repelled by hundreds students throwing rocks.
It marked the second time in one week that the police entered the university, breaking a Honduran law that prohibits the presence of police or military on Honduran university campuses.

Profesores, estudiantes y miembros del Frente Nacional de Resistencia Popular participaron en una tercera semana de acciones contra la privatización de la educación. Los estudiantes de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma en la capital de Tegucigalpa tomaron el campus y la calle cercana. Fueron atacados por la policia antimotines con gaz lagrimogena. Miembros de la policía entró el campus de la entrada trasera antes de ser repelidos por cientos de estudiantes tirando piedras.
Por segunda vez en una semana la policía se metio en la universidad, rompiendo una ley hondureña que prohíbe la presencia de policías y militares en los predios universitarios del pais.

Washington, D.C. – There are currently reports of a possible attempted coup d’etat underway in Ecuador. There have been violent protests by police and some elements of the military, reports that President Correa has been injured, and reports that the air force has closed down a number of airports.
The Organization of American States will convene an emergency meeting at 2:30 Eastern Standard Time in Washington D.C., to consider the situation.

March 24th of this year was the thirtieth anniversary of the assassination of Oscar Arnulfo Romero, the Roman Catholic archbishop of El Salvador.
His killing drew attention to the murderous rampages of death squads in that nation and throughout Central America as no other slaying had, although hundreds of thousands of civilians were slaughtered in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras before and during the 1980s by paramilitary formations usually led by graduates of the U.S.’s School of the Americas and covertly funded by the same nation’s Central Intelligence Agency.
Graduates of the Pentagon’s School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia (now the equally euphemistic Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) include the man responsible for ordering Romero’s killing, the late Roberto D’Aubuisson; Efrain Rios Montt, head of the military junta in Guatemala in 1982-1983 which perpetrated some of the worst atrocities in the nation’s bloodstained history; and Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, who was dismissed as chief of the Honduran military on June 25 of last year and led the coup against President Manuel Zelaya three days later.

About half the states in the US require that a woman seeking an abortion be told certain things before she can obtain the medical procedure. In South Dakota, for example, until a few months ago, staff was required to tell women: “The abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being”; the pregnant woman has “an existing relationship with that unborn human being,” a relationship protected by the U.S. Constitution and the laws of South Dakota; and a “known medical risk” of abortion is an “increased risk of suicide ideation and suicide.” A federal judge has now eliminated the second and third required assertions, calling them “untruthful and misleading.” 1
I personally would question even the first assertion about a fetus or an embryo being a human being, but that’s not the point I wish to make here. I’d like to suggest that before a young American man or woman can enlist in the armed forces s/he must be told the following by the staff of the military recruitment office:

Zelaya to Leave Honduras As Coup Leaders Cleared
Honduras, ousted president Manuel Zelaya is due to leave the country today after president-elect Porfirio Lobo is sworn into office. Zelaya has taken refuge in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa since returning to Honduras in September. On Tuesday, the Honduran Supreme Court dismissed all charges against six military commanders involved in the June 28th coup that removed Zelaya from office. We go inside the Brazilian embassy to speak with Democracy Now’s Andres Conteris.

Aside from the racism that the people of European descent and white majority countries have exhibited towards Haiti, Haiti, has not been allowed to prosper, because a country like Haiti (extremely poor, that has ‘never really had it together’) cannot be seen (by other impoverished nations) to be successful. It’s similar to Nicaragua and the revolution led there against the U.S. backed dictator Somoza; Nicaragua is the second poorest country, in the hemisphere. The abominable Ronald Reagan had to kill a socialist country like Nicaragua, because you cannot give any hope to such countries as Haiti and Nicaragua. If you give these nations and peoples ‘dignified poverty’ as Aristide has called for in Haiti, others like them will get the same idea!
