The prominent scientist Stephen Hawking warned humanity that, “We’re acting with reckless indifference to the future on planet earth. It will be difficult to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million.”

Why is humanity hell-bent on destroying the world? Has humanity lost its moral compass, if it ever had a real one? Numerous people, disappointed in church and religion, are embracing atheism, but in so doing throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Based upon the Gold Medallion award-winning best-seller, The Case for Christ documents Lee Strobel’s journey from atheism to faith through his two-year investigation of the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. Strobel, the former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune, draws upon his investigative skills to examine the historical accuracy of the Gospels, the personal claims of Jesus and His resurrection from the dead. Is there evidence to confirm that Jesus of Nazareth was, indeed, the son of God and the savior of the world? This remarkable film features interviews with 10 leading Biblical scholars from North America and England, cutting-edge apologetics, and a compelling original music score.

Editor’s Note: On Tuesday night, Chris Hedges and Sam Harris debated “Religion, Politics and the End of the World.” The following is Hedges’ opening statement, in which he argues that Harris and other critics of faith have mistakenly blamed religion for the ills of the world, when the true danger lies in the human heart and its capacity for evil. We will post Sam Harris’ statement and a recording of the debate soon.

Sam Harris has conflated faith with tribalism. His book is an attack not on faith but on a system of being and believing that is dangerous and incompatible with the open society. He attacks superstition, a belief in magic and the childish notion of an anthropomorphic God that is characteristic of the tribe, of the closed society. He calls this religion. I do not.

To the Editor

Open letter to Richard Dawkins, author of The GOD Delusion.

Your book The GOD Delusion is very interesting. You debunked many things that I never believed in, but I think you have thrown out the baby with the bathwater.

Well, you’re not alone. A newspaper reported of a fifty-nine year old Anglican high school teacher who recited his favourite prayer every day on his way to work, and suddenly he just stopped praying. “I stopped because I lost my faith, I now truly loath any sight or sound of religion. I blush at what I used to believe.” He now is an avowed atheist. Sadly, he’s messed up for life, and hundreds of millions like him.

MLK embodied the immense power that spirituality brings to a social justice movement….

Preface: While I recognize that there are many atheists in the Animal Rights Movement who adhere to veganism, and that people of many different religions and philosophies advocate and fight for nonhuman animals, my personal spirituality is the backbone of my veganism and my activism. I want to make it clear that I’m not questioning the commitment of vegans or activists who aren’t spiritual and I also want to clarify that I am not a theologian. I merely want to use this essay as a vehicle to comment on the nature of my spirituality and to express the immensity of the strength it provides me.

Recently, the prominent scientist Stephen Hawking warned humanity that “We’re acting with reckless indifference to our future on planet earth. It will be difficult to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million.”  Some time earlier he said that the “Doomsday Clock advanced to 5 minutes to midnight.” David Suzuki echoes the same words “we’re sleepwalking into the future.”
