April 23, 2009

Sibel gave a 75-min interview to Electric Politics on April 10. You can listen to it here. Mizgin has an overview of the interview here. A partial transcript follows:

Heroin, money-laundering and terrorism

Sibel Edmonds: First of all, it has been documented in the past several decades, the importance of narcotics in the Turkish economy, but also the role of Turkish MIT – that is Turkish Intelligence – and the military having an active role. But you’re also looking at the increased role of certain Central Asian countries and the Caucuses, and if you look at some of these regimes, these are the regimes that we have been supporting. Their economies also have become dependent on narcotics, because they have become a major transit – and in some places, for certain countries such as Azerbaijan, they have become major production centers.

This is a 20 minute Radio Roxanne audio clip with an interview of Women in Black (WiB), NYC–With one NYC Jewish woman who helped found NYC’s WiB, and one NYC Jewish woman whose personal transformation prompted her to join WiB’s weekly vigils, and then went to Palestine and Israel to learn firsthand about what are the living the conditions there. The link to the audio at my website is here: http://www.spiritmorphstudio.com/radioroxanne1-26-09.html and at the end of the written back-story (–not a part of the audio narration, which is a different text only contained in the audio, nor the interview–) to my encounter with them… I hope that this post goes some way to shattering the wall of lies regarding what’s really going on in Palestine and Israel, at a time of precarious “cease fire”. There are also some links to more information at the end, including a few actions you can take.

Temporary halt to Gaza bombing a paltry response as extreme violence victimizes civilians

The military offensive in the Gaza Strip is affecting civilians indiscriminately, while medical teams continue to face serious obstacles to providing assistance, the international medical humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said today. The international community must not be content with a limited truce, which MSF said is largely inadequate for providing life-saving assistance.

As the Israeli military offensive continues, the toll, estimated at 600 deaths and 2,950 wounded in just 11 days, is reaching alarming proportions and is indicative of extreme violence indiscriminately affecting civilians.

“Today, 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, almost half of them children, are the victims of incessant shooting and bombing,” said Franck Joncret, MSF’s head of mission. “How can anyone believe that such a steamroller attack would spare civilians, who are prevented from fleeing and are crowded in a densely-populated enclave?”

Chávez Supporters Win 17 out of 23 Venezuelan States, but Lose 3 Most Populous

Dandelion Salad

November 23, 2008 (venezuelanalysis.com)

President Hugo Chavez’s governing party, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) got mixed results in the regional and local elections today, winning stronghly in 17 out of 23 states, but losing the country’s two most populous states and the Capital District of Caracas, with two more states still to be decided.

At midnight Venezuelan time, about eight hours after the first polls closed, the president of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), Tibisay Lucena, announced the results of the regional and local elections, with 95% of the vote counted.

According to Lucena, participation had reached an unprecedented high for a regional vote, at 65.45%. Over 17 million voters were registered, which is several million more than in the last such election four years ago. As a result, lines tended to be long and many polling places had to remain open far longer than the official closing time of 4pm.

Chávez’s PSUV lost the governorships of the two most populous states, Miranda and Zulia, and the mayor’s office of greater Caracas, which will be a significant blow to Chávez and his movement.

The perhaps greatest surprise is the upset victory, with 52.45% of the vote, of opposition leader Antonio Ledezma, of the Brave People’s Alliance, in greater Caracas. Ledezma once was governor of the city, from 1992 to 1995, when it was an appointed office. He was then elected as mayor of the city’s main municipality of Libertador in 1995.  Ledezma is considered to be an integral part of the country’s old political guard, given his ties to former President Carlos Andrés Perez.
