Democracy Now! on Jan 5, 2017

https://democracynow.org – We speak with Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Glenn Greenwald as the Senate Armed Services Committee holds a hearing on alleged Russian cyber-attacks and top intelligence officials are briefing President Obama on a review of evidence that Russia hacked the email servers of the Democratic National Committee. President-elect Trump will be briefed on Friday. This comes as he is supporting statements by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange that Russia was not the source for the mass leak of emails from the Democratic Party.

University of Maryland and Sourcefire Announce New Cybersecurity Partnership

Image by University of Maryland Press Releases via Flickr

The US has become a psychotic superpower, high on paranoia induced by its own poisonous propaganda. This unstable, lawless rogue state, armed to the teeth and deluded by its own self-righteousness, poses the greatest risk to world security.

The Western public, in particular, should forget about all sorts of imagined evil enemies, and just focus on this one fact: the safety of the world and the future of mankind are being held hostage by the US government, its shadow agencies and the financial-military-industrial complex that it serves.

In the US, the Bill of Rights maps out the fundamental privileges each citizen has in the country, but is it time to draft an Internet Bill of Rights? Congress has attempted to implement legislation that could stop online freedoms, but a group of online advocates are pushing lawmakers to sign the Internet Bill of Rights to allow the freedom of expression, access, openness, innovation and privacy. Aaron Swartz, founder and executive director for Demand Progress, joins us with his take. Continue reading

Project Censored: Important stories unreported or suppressed by the media most Americans watch or read.

In the week Lord Leveson published almost a million words about his inquiry into the “culture, practice and ethics” of Britain’s corporate press, two illuminating books about media and freedom were also published. Their contrast with the Punch and Judy show staged by Leveson is striking.

For 36 years, Project Censored, based in California, has documented critically important stories unreported or suppressed by the media most Americans watch or read. This year’s report is Censored 2013: Dispatches from the media revolution by Mickey Huff and Andy Lee Roth (Seven Stories Press). Continue reading

Inside Story – Iran’s nuclear setback

https://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/

AlJazeeraEnglish | January 21, 2011

Iran’s nuclear programme is under the spotlight again this week; diplomats from the five permanent members of the security council plus Germany are in Istanbul for talks with Saeed Jalili, Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator. Iran is under pressure to prove that its nuclear activities are peaceful. The US has warned of more sanctions if the government does not cooperate. But behind the scenes, US and Israeli officials are surprisingly upbeat about the issue. That is because it is widely believed that Iran’s nuclear programme has been put back by several years after a computer virus damaged a number of its centrifuges. But who is behind the Stuxnet worm? Inside Story, with presenter Shiulie Gosh, discusses.

Seymour Hersch has another big Pentagon story in The New Yorker, this time called “The Online Threat: Should we be worried about a cyber war?”

The Pentagon is working overtime to ensure that cyber war becomes the next great fear in the minds of the American people – coming after the Red scare of the Cold War and the present “terrorism” freak-out with the Muslim world. In the story Hersch casts doubt on the fear-mongering with this passage:

U.S. Cyber Command is scheduled to be activated this month, in the words of a Reuters dispatch “ready to go to war in cyberspace” with full operational capability.

The launching of the world’s first multi-service – with the involvement of all major branches of the U.S. armed forces: Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy – military command is being coordinated with a complementary initiative by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Europe, the joint effort striving toward a worldwide cyber warfare system.

Last month the U.S. Defense Department’s Joint Task Force Global Network Operations command was deactivated and absorbed into U.S. Cyber Command (CYBERCOM) after a decade-long existence.

The Pentagon’s number two official, Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn, was in Brussels, Belgium on September 15 to address the North Atlantic Council – the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s top civilian body – and the private Security & Defence Agenda think tank.

His comments at the second event, hosted by the only defense-related institution of its type in the city that hosts NATO’s and the European Union’s headquarters, dealt extensively with what Lynn referred to as a “cyber shield” over all of Europe, which he described as a “critical element” for the 28-nation military bloc to address and endorse at its summit in Lisbon, Portugal on November 19-20.

Big Brother Deploys Snooping Sensors on Private Networks

Rather than addressing an impending social catastrophe, Western governments, which serve the interests of the economic elites, have installed a “Big Brother” police state with a mandate to confront and repress all forms of opposition and social dissent. — Michel Chossudovsky and Andrew Gavin Marshall, Preface, The Global Economic Crisis: The Great Depression of the XXI Century, Montreal: Global Research, 2010, p. xx.

In a sign that illegal surveillance programs launched by the Bush administration are accelerating under President Obama, The Wall Street Journal revealed last week that a National Security Agency (NSA) program, PERFECT CITIZEN, is under development.

With a cover story that this is merely a “research” effort meant to “detect cyber assaults on private companies and government agencies running such critical infrastructure as the electricity grid and nuclear-power plants,” it is also clear that the next phase in pervasive government spying is underway.
