John Edwards in Springfield, MO

There’s two good ways of looking at Andrew Young’s new book on John Edwards. First way is that it is a National Enquirer sort of trashy cashin dishing out all the inside dirt on John Edwards and his sex life, mostly at the expense of his saintly cancer infected and now dead wife Elizabeth. All that is there, sure. I suspect that most of the reviewing press looks at this book this way, and that academia, if they pay it any attention, will as well. The other way of looking at it is that the book is Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men in real life form, a political right-hand man’s story of his life in politics with a talented and charismatic and powerful politician, from his rise to his fall. That’s how I see it, and I see a great deal of value to this book because of that. Whatever the tabloid aspects are to this story, it is a most valuable truthful account of the inside of American politics and of the people in it. It also is a cautionary tale for us all, but not in the usual sense of “This could happen to you–beware!” of most cautionary tales. It has a more disturbing one than that, I’m afraid.

The GOP Horserace

From MSNBC: If you think the Democratic Congressional Committee Chairman overstated it by saying that “there is no district that is safe for Republican candidates.” What of a Republican congressman’s reaction…Tom Davis of Virginia, stamping his feet on the floor of the Capitol basement today. Quoting — “This is the floor. We’re below the floor.” In our third story on the Countdown: last night’s special-election victory by a Democrat… in a Mississippi district so heavily Republican that President Bush carried it by 25 points in 2004. With the GOP’s attempt to win by running against Senator Barack Obama and Jeremiah Wright — in a race-baiting manner — failing.

The Edwards Endorsement

From MSNBC: Senator Clinton…last night she won the what in the where, now? Our fifth story on the Countdown: the polls have now closed in the State of John Edwards: Senator Obama tonight winning the Edwards endorsement by a margin of 100 percent. And 24 hours and 30 minutes after voting ended in West Virginia it, and perhaps Senator Clinton herself is old news.

It’s an Election, Not a Coronation by Rosemarie Jackowski

Dandelion Salad

February 26th, 2008

Democrats are once again experiencing Nader angst. In fact, many of them are suffering so much anxiety that they not only attack Nader, but also Nader supporters. The Democratic Party needs to be reminded that it is an election, not a coronation.

No one automatically deserves a vote simply because of Party affiliation. Hillary and Obama will get the votes of the Party faithful. Other voters will cast their ballots based on issues. On the issues, is any candidate better than Nader? No major party candidate even compares. That is why they have refused to allow Nader to debate.

The Democrats had their chance, and once again they blew it. They started out with Kucinich who called for the immediate withdrawal from Iraq — not only withdrawal across the Iraq border — but Kucinich called for bringing all troops home now. He also supported a Single Payer Health care system. That would save the lives of 18,000 U.S. citizens every year.

The Democrats also had Edwards who had promised to fight the wave of corporate crime — a major problem. Would there be war if the corporations did not profit from the killing?

Instead of voting for Kucinich or Edwards, the Party faithful cast their votes for candidates with a questionable history of support for peace, health care, and economic justice. This has created a vacuum of ideas. Nader is now filling that vacuum. The Democrats could have had it all — a peace candidate and an easy win against a weakened Republican candidate. Instead, they will again blame Nader, while refusing to accept the inevitable results of the votes of the Party faithful. They have ignored one of the most fundamental lessons of politics — you get what you vote for.

The Democrats have turned their backs on a large segment of the population — the anti-war groups. No self-respecting peace advocate can vote for either Democratic candidate. One candidate wants to increase the size of the military. The other stood by in silence while the Clinton administration was responsible for the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children. Both Democratic candidates have foreign policy positions that are to the far right of Republican Ron Paul.

Nader is not only correct on issues of Foreign Policy, but he is also the world’s greatest consumer advocate. His candidacy is perfect timing. We are all consumers — consumers of war and peace, consumers of public utilities, consumers of agricultural products, the list could go on and on.

How’s NAFTA working for you? Have you read the fine print on your credit card statement recently? Are you happy with your public utility company — what about your cable company, your Internet provider? What about health care insurers who try to maximize profits by denying medical care to the seriously ill? What is the salary of the CEO of your health insurance company?

Lack of vigilant consumer protection has led to a culture of distrust. We live in a red tape jungle. Only Nader can bring about the necessary changes so that consumers can develop a sense of trust and confidence in the corporations that provide essential goods and services.

Ralph Nader has been a national treasure for decades. He has worked quietly — without publicity or fanfare — helping ordinary citizens. I first met him many years ago. The public utility had a plan to build a floating nuclear power plant off the coast of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Ralph came to Cape May. He met with the citizens. Because of his help, the floating power plant was not built.

Members of the Press have shown a lack of interest in, and knowledge of, the issues. Some TV interviewers are so uninformed that they avoid the real issues. Watching them is sometimes painful. The problem is not limited to FOX. Tim, Chris, and the others make me wish for a real journalist such as Helen Thomas.

Nader is not the only candidate who has been the victim here. Ron Paul and Mike Gravel have also been marginalized and disrespected. The voters are the ultimate victims. They never get to hear the platforms of all candidates. Cynthia McKinney has a powerful message that most voters have not heard. How about a Nader/McKinney team! Race, gender, and party affiliation barriers can be broken down with support for a Nader/McKinney candidacy.

The Democrats have a history of using unethical, strong-arm legal tactics to keep Nader off the ballots and out of the debates. Is there anything that they won’t try in order to silence an opposing candidate? Nader supporters will have to come up with a nation-wide network of Pro Bono lawyers to help with any assault from the Democrats. That’s not how democracy is supposed to work. Freedom of speech should not have to be purchased in a court room. Open the debates. Allow all candidates to be heard.

Nader’s announcement as a candidate has given an opportunity to demand the truth — but in the words of Jack Nicolson, maybe the voters “can’t stand the truth.”

Give Dennis Kucinich His Due by Steve Cobble

February 19, 2008

Five years ago, this month, the world said no to the Iraq War, with massive demonstrations all around the world involving 10 million people. In the United States, more than 100,000 people came to New York City to challenge the Bush/Cheney rush to war–and one of the speakers, one of the very few elected officials to speak that day, was Dennis Kucinich.

So what, you say? Well, maybe it’s time to give Dennis his due.

Compare the outpouring of affection and respect for John Edwards with the snark and abuse offered Kucinich when they each bowed out of the presidential race last month. Most liberal columnists and progressive bloggers offered kudos to Edwards for forcing and/or encouraging Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to move left on healthcare, on trade issues, on poverty and inequality. John and Elizabeth Edwards did exactly that, and I offer my own thanks for the issues they ran on, especially given everything that was going on in their family. They deserve our appreciation for boldly putting good issue positions on the table, fighting hard for them and opening the door for the other candidates to get bolder, too.

Please Consider the Courts, All Ye Deeply Ticked-Off

I’m as upset as anybody about how corporate money and media have undermined our presidential primary process — I wept, when Edwards gave up — but I’m even more disturbed by the “don’t bother voting” movement that’s developing among some progressives and by the whiff of third-party candidacies that would erode Democratic support.

Mind you, I’ve said for ages that we’d be better off with a multi-party system that fosters alliances and accommodations, instead of winner take all; however, that prospect is so far from viability in this country as to be a pipe dream.

One further proviso should be stated before I get to my main point: I confess to feeling torn between voting for Edwards or Obama on Tuesday, having veered back and forth all week. Fortunately, whether or not to throw away a primary vote as a growl of personal protest doesn’t have to be decided in this moment.

Anyway, it’s November that I want to talk about, and the fact that even Hillary — whose husband brought us the media conglomeration that has so distorted news and political discourse (plus the financial deregulation and trade policies that have wrecked our economy) — wouldn’t turn to the Heritage Foundation for her judicial nominees.

If the Supremes get one more member from the radical right, this country will be screwed for decades — not to mention the evils being done daily in our lower courts now packed with right-wing judges who routinely rule for the powerful over those whom they’ve harmed.

Every few years, we get a crack at choosing a better President and Congress, but the courts roll on largely unchanged until someone dies or resigns. Thus due to duration, every judicial appointment has far greater weight than an elective position, impacting not only us but today’s children and potentially another generation to come.

I’d love to be able to vote in November for Edwards — as many others would love to vote for him, Kucinich, Biden, Dodd or Richardson — but I’ll show up and vote for whichever Dem gets that far, because it’s about a lot more than pleasing me. It’s about rejecting the hold of institutionalized injustice, both now and after I’m gone.

There’s also the possibility that Barack or Hillary could surprise us — and even themselves — by putting the people first and telling their grillionaire sponsors to go jump off something. FDR wasn’t elected on the platform that he subsequently enacted, remember? We face similarly extreme circumstances today and either Democrat might rise sublimely to the occasion. No Republican will, nor can any third-party candidate be elected.

Statement on Edwards’s Dropping Out by Mike Gravel

Dandelion Salad

Gravel for President ‘08 (Former US Sen. D-AK)

by Mike Gravel
Mike’s blog post
January 31, 2008

It saddened me greatly to hear yesterday that John Edwards had decided to drop out of the race. We may have had our differences on some issues, such as supporting gay marriage and ending the war on drugs, but clearly he was a better choice for America than the two remaining so-called top-tier Democratic candidates, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Edwards and I agreed more than we disagreed on many vital issues, such as ending the war in Iraq, cutting the military budget and fighting the culture of corruption in Washington.

To his credit, Edwards has shown great moral strength and integrity by admitting that his original support for the war in 2002 was “a mistake.” Now, he advocates ending the war in its entirety, something that Clinton and Obama have not done. Clinton and Obama have the power to stop the violence, but neither one has stepped forward to show true leadership in the Senate by confronting Bush and the military-industrial complex on Iraq and the widening war on terror.

And when the mainstream media and the Democratic Party leadership conspired to drop me from the national debates, it was Edwards who kept the pressure on Clinton for her vote in favor of war with Iran.

Let’s not forget that Clinton has raised more money from the military-industrial complex than any other candidate – including even the Republicans! Her ties to corporations like WalMart, her legislation that benefits defense firms like Northrop Grumman and her pro-war voting record – let’s just say we shouldn’t be expecting her to cut the military budget and reinvest the money domestically where it is needed most.

As for Obama, where’s the change? He votes like Clinton, and his endorsement of military spending increases and his Wall Street backing make him yet another corporate-backed Establishment candidate.

Every day now, we hear pundits speculating on who is going to drop out of the race next. In their myopic view, however, they do not understand what we do. Winning the nomination isn’t the only reason some of us run for the highest office in the country. We persevere because we care deeply for our country, and we subject ourselves to the grueling schedule and the often unflattering media spotlight because we believe in the importance of the issues that we bring to the table.

It is these issues where John and I agree that I hope will bring us all together in support of real change – not the safe, focus-group-tested solutions proffered by media-friendly candidates.

AP NewsBreak: Democrat John Edwards to End His Presidential Bid

Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters’ sympathies, The Associated Press has learned.

The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two aides. The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning — Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

The former North Carolina senator will not immediately endorse either candidate in what is now a two-person race for the Democratic nomination, said one adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the announcement. Clinton said Wednesday that Edwards called her to inform her about his decision.

Four in 10 Edwards supporters said their second choice in the race is Clinton, while a quarter prefer Obama, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo poll conducted late this month. Both Clinton and Obama would welcome Edwards’ backing and the support of the 56 delegates he had collected.

Edwards waged a spirited top-tier campaign against the two better-funded rivals, even as he dealt with the stunning blow of his wife’s recurring cancer diagnosis. In a dramatic news conference last March, the couple announced that the breast cancer that she thought she had beaten had returned, but they would continue the campaign.

Edwards planned to announce his campaign was ending with his wife and three children at his side. Then he planned to work with Habitat for Humanity at the volunteer-fueled rebuilding project Musicians’ Village, the adviser said.

With that, Edwards’ campaign will end the way it began 13 months ago — with the candidate pitching in to rebuild lives in a city still ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Edwards embraced New Orleans as a glaring symbol of what he described as a Washington that didn’t hear the cries of the downtrodden.

It’s always confused me how people can get behind Edwards as the alternative to Obama and Hillary when it’s quite obvious the guy’s no liberal. Edwards only received a 60% rating by the ACLU, he’s adamantly against marriage equality, he voted for the Patriot Act, supported the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, and voted for the war in Iraq. Then he used these same initiatives that he supported as reason to criticize Ashcroft and Bush. Even if we are to now believe that he does mean what he says about civil liberties and poverty, I’d still have to agree with Nader’s assessment of John Edwards as a “sniveling coward” for his inability to actually take a stand at the critical moment.

All that people seem to talk about is how John Edwards is saying the right things. Yeah, but is he doing the right things? Has he ever? No. Edwards’ supporters are no more interested in the issues than Clinton or Obama supporters. It’s so appealing to think that he’s the most progressive candidate than it is to understand that he’s damn near identical to the other two. Perhaps if he didn’t look so much like Kennedy, people would be a bit more critical of his hollow marketing. I do agree with his campaign rhetoric that there are “two Americas”, but it does seem as if there are also two Edwards’ to inhabit both.

In an interview with the Huffington Post on Thursday, Feingold restated his hesitance to endorse either Sen. Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. Both, he said, would make great presidents. The same praise was not, however, heaped upon Feingold’s former Senate colleague Edwards, whose political sincerity the Wisconsin Democrat questioned.

“I don’t understand how somebody could vote, five or six critical votes, one way in the Senate and then make your campaign the opposite positions,” Feingold said, expanding on comments he made a week ago to the Appleton (Wisconsin) Post-Crescent. “That doesn’t give me confidence that if the person became president that they would continue the kind of policies that they are using in the Democratic primary. I’m more likely to believe what they did in the Senate.”

Asked to explain what precisely he found problematic, Feingold offered that Edwards had “taken in” voters by switching positions on several key issues.

“You have to consider what the audience is, and obviously these are very popular positions to take when you are in a primary where you are trying to get the progressive vote. But wait a minute — there were opportunities to vote against the bankruptcy bill, there was an opportunity to vote against the China [trade] deal. Those are the moments where you sort of find out where somebody is. So I think, people are being taken in a little bit that now he is taking these positions.”

The Edwards campaign did not return a request for comment.

It is a real problem, John Edwards should not have been attacked by BillO over this. It is a problem almost any one can see on the streets on almost every city in the country.

Is Bill this blind, or is he just so out of touch that all poor people to him don’t exist. To think there are no Vets out there with no serious problems, even living under bridges. Well to me it is just out right denial.

Maybe Bill should just go and label him self anti-American, he does not even support our troops. This is just a sad story, and BillO makes a huge joke out of it just to personally attack Edwards.

Bill you better keep to your word on this one, and help with the problem like you said you would. I don’t think just a apology is going to cut it this time. Time to put all that money you make on the crap you say to a good cause for once.
