Consumerism, and the capitalist mentality more broadly, are equivalent to nihilism. They strip the human experience of meaning beyond what serves the market. When a culture revolves around this monetary and commercialist view of the world, it ceases to bring true fulfillment.

This week on Economic Update, Professor Wolff delivers updates on the decline of U.S. cities and the potential of “private cities”, the ever-growing freelancers’ economy, why the U.S. Supreme Court decided to legalize sports betting now, Fiat-Chrysler & Porsche added to the emissions cheating scandal, the new federal jobs guarantee and a Catholic University attacks the concept of tenure.
A story that appeared in the leading inside-Washington political journal The Hill last week bore a headline that ought to send a chill down the spine of anyone who believes in democracy: “Half of Republicans Would Back Postponing 2020 Election if Trump Proposed It.” Read the report’s opening 90 words and let them sink in:

Session 4 Panel Abstract:
The converging crises of fascism, endless war, climate change, mass migrations, and economic/racial/gender oppression create unprecedented urgency for united, radical action – in the street and in the voting booth. At previous Left Forums – and over the past many decades – progressives have debated the merits of working to “reform” the Democratic Party versus building a united independent radical political front.
War has indeed become perpetual and peace no longer even a fleeting wish nor a distant memory. We have become habituated to the rumblings of war and the steady drum beat of propaganda about war’s necessity and the noble motives that inspire it. We will close hospitals. We will close schools. We will close libraries and museums. We will sell off our parklands and water supply. People will sleep on the streets and go hungry. The war machine will go on.

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges speaks at the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center banquet Jan. 19, 2013. Hedges and others have sued President Obama and the Department of Defense to squash the National Defense Authorization Act, which permits the government to pick up anybody they wish at any time and hold him however long they want—without charging the alleged offender with a crime and without notifying family members of his or her whereabouts. A federal court agreed and ruled the law unconstitutional; however, Pentagon lawyers immediately made an “emergency” plea to the appellate court, which stayed the law and set a hearing date for Feb. 6. Hedges retraced the history of the corporate takeover of democracy and the U.S. government, and he said the only remedy is massive civil disobedience. Hedges’ latest book is Days of Destruction; Days of Revolt.

In this episode of Redacted Tonight VIP, Lee Camp interviews Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges. They jump right into it concerning startling evidence about how the US has become a corporate totalitarian state, compared to the democracy it claims to be. They go on to discuss how the two-party system duopoly is leading to the demise of our country. Hedges also explains just how dangerous it is for leftists to vote for Hillary Clinton, even with the specter of Donald Trump looming in the background. This information is explosive. Enjoy and share.
