health care options

There has been considerable confusion about the differences between single-payer healthcare, which Healthcare-NOW! supports, and the healthcare reform options, including President Obama’s “public option,” being introduced by the House and Senate.

So we’ve collected the following resources to clarify the difference:

Friday: Key Vote on Single Payer Healthcare + Fax them now!

from an email from http://www.democrats.com

At last night’s press conference on healthcare, President Obama shocked the media with a very inconvenient truth:

“I want to cover everybody. Now, the truth is that, unless you have a single-payer system, in which everybody is automatically covered, then you’re probably not going to reach every single individual.”

So why won’t our elected Democrats in Washington fight for a single-payer system that will cover everyone? Especially when it’s the only system that will actually save money by eliminating 30% in utterly wasted overhead from greedy insurance giants?

The congressional healthcare reform bill, H.R. 3200, now contains the Kucinich amendment thus keeping hope alive for a single-payer system.

Two weeks ago, Dennis Kucinich proposed an amendment to the healthcare reform bill that keeps the single-payer option alive.  Kucinich’s amendment will permit states the power to introduce single-payer healthcare systems.  Importantly, Kucinich’s amendment drew bipartisan support by uniting proponents of single-payer healthcare with states rights advocates, and it is now the crucial part of the landmark bill that is due to be voted on by the end of this month.

Bait and switch: How the “public option” was sold

The people who brought us the “public option” began their campaign promising one thing but now promote something entirely different. To make matters worse, they have not told the public they have backpedalled. The campaign for the “public option” resembles the classic bait-and-switch scam: tell your customers you’ve got one thing for sale when in fact you’re selling something very different.

As Obama Continues Push for Healthcare Reform, House Committee Approves Kucinich-Sponsored Measure to Keep Single-Payer Option Alive

On Capitol Hill, Democratic leaders say they’re open to paring down a healthcare reform bill in order to sway “conservative” Democrats who’ve threatened to oppose the measure that would create a government-run public insurance option. We speak with progressive Democrat, Rep. Dennis Kucinich D-Ohio. A House committee recently approved his amendment that would allow individual states to adopt a single-payer system. Perhaps most Americans deserve the federal government they have.  A government that, contrary to the lofty rhetoric of Barack Obama, is pure politics as usual.  A government that is as corrupted by moneyed interests as ever.  A government that is as dysfunctional and inefficient as ever.

A government that should have prevented the current recession but did not and now has spent horrendous amounts of money that has largely been wasted.  A government that has put many future generations in debt.  A government that makes a mockery out of the concept of democracy.
