BIRMINGHAM — Almost two months after being released from a federal prison in Oakdale, La., former Gov. Don Siegelman looks noticeably healthier.

The ghostly pallor and thinness that seemed to cling to him when he was released is all but gone.

Rove was to respond to a request by Conyers to testify under oath before the committee, but failed to answer by the May 12 deadline.

“He of course let that deadline come and pass without agreeing to testify,” Siegelman said. “At some point … they will deal with the issue of whether or not to subpoena Karl Rove.”

The Star: Why do you believe Rove hasn’t agreed to testify under oath?

Siegelman: He doesn’t want to run the risk of lying under oath and being prosecuted for perjury.

Tell Congress: Arrest Karl Rove

More than seven years too late, it appears as if a growing number of congresspersons are realizing that they are part of a co-equal branch of government. After allowing their institution to be disrespected and at times ignored by the executive branch, top officials in Congress are finally expressing a willingness to use their full power under the Constitution to rein in an out-of-control administration.

The current target: Karl Rove.

Rove has been asked by the House Judiciary Committee to testify about his involvement in the Justice Department’s prosecution and imprisonment of former Alabama Governor Don Siegleman. As Rove has so far refused to testify voluntarily, members of Congress have started sending signals that they are prepared to go to the mattresses over this.

Two prominent members of the House Judiciary Committee have advocated the use of “inherent contempt” against Rove, which would allow the House Sergeant-of-Arms to forcibly bring Rove to the House to testify.

We need you to let your representative know that you support this forceful action. If you agree that Congress should arrest Karl Rove and force him to testify before the House, please fill in the information below and click on “Send my message.”

Break-ins plague targets of US Attorneys

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA – In two states where US attorneys are already under fire for serious allegations of political prosecutions, seven people associated with three federal cases have experienced 10 suspicious incidents including break-ins and arson.

These crimes raise serious questions about possible use of deliberate intimidation tactics not only because of who the victims are and the already wide criticism of the prosecutions to begin with, but also because of the suspicious nature of each incident individually as well as the pattern collectively. Typically burglars do not break-into an office or private residence only to rummage through documents, for example, as is the case with most of the burglaries in these two federal cases.

House committee threatens Rove with subpoena

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Judiciary Committee threatened Thursday to subpoena former White House adviser Karl Rove if he does not agree by May 12 to testify about former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman’s corruption case.

In a letter to Rove’s attorney, committee Democrats called it “completely unacceptable” that the Republican political strategist has so far rejected the committee’s request for sworn testimony even as he discusses the matter publicly through the media.

BIRMINGHAM | Former Gov. Don Siegelman said Thursday that he wants former White House adviser Karl Rove to testify before Congress, whether ‘he lies under oath, tells the truth or pleads the Fifth.’

Siegelman was freed on bond March 28 after serving nine months in federal prison for bribery and obstruction of justice. He said that while his primary concern is winning his appeal, there are bigger issues involved in his prosecution by the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Montgomery.

‘This is not about Don Siegelman, and it’s not about the Alabama case,’ he said in his first interview with an Alabama newspaper since being released from a federal prison in Oakdale, La. ‘This is about America, it is about finding out who hijacked the Department of Justice and used it as a political tool to win elections.’
