Biden, Obama & The Blood-Dimmed Tide + Tongue of Flame by Chris Floyd

I’ve been away for seven days, without access to email or the internet, in a country where I couldn’t speak the language, in a place with no newspapers in English anywhere to be found. It was a blissful detoxification from the media echo chamber — and from the even more deadly poisons of politics and power that the chamber so confusingly and cacophonously presents.

Only once, briefly, did I find myself in a room where CNN was blaring on a tiny television set. As it happened, it was the exact moment when Joe Biden was being anointed as Barack Obama’s running mate. It was a live feed: Biden was at the podium, giving a strangely stilted speech in a fake Southern accent. (Perhaps he was trying to channel Bill Clinton — or maybe Sam Nunn.) Although wearing a tie, he was coatless, with shirtsleeves rolled up, in that classic pose of political hackery: a man ready to “go to work for the American people.” (Obama, looking on rather distractedly from the side, was dressed in the same way).

Tongue of Flame: A Speech Presaging Endless War

As we noted here yesterday, Arthur Silber has written a powerful and profound series of articles on the Joe Biden VP nomination, and its deeper implications. He has now followed these up with a piece on Biden’s disturbing — not to say blood-curdling — acceptance speech on Wednesday night. You should read Silber’s latest piece in full, but I wanted to add a few comments of my own.

Joe Biden’s acceptance speech was indeed a remarkable performance — bellicose and delusional and deceitful by turns. If you closed your eyes, there were moments when you would have thought that you were back in the Cow Palace in 1964, listening to Barry Goldwater belching fire and threatening doom for all those who challenge America’s uniquely exceptional special unquestionable morally superior dominance of the world.

Big Dog, Little Tail: The American Elite Resolves on War With Iran

I.

Let’s be clear about one thing: Israel will not attack Iran without the full knowledge and approval of the United States government. The trigger of the “warning shot” of Israel’s long-range air-strike exercise last week was actually pulled in Washington. The Israelis will not force or deceive the U.S. government into an attack on Iran; that attack – which grows more certain by the hour – will take place because America’s bipartisan foreign policy establishment and military-industrial complex (to the extent that there is any real difference between the two) want it to happen, or are willing to let it happen.

It is of course an article of faith for some people that the Israeli tails wags the big American dog. This rather ludicrous assertion is nothing more than the pernicious doctrine of “American exceptionalism” tricked out in “dissident” drag. For its underlying assumption is that good ole true-blue American elites would never commit war crimes or seek empire and geopolitical dominion unless they had somehow been tricked into it by those wily Jews. This is exactly backwards. If Israel was of no use to the American elite’s domination agenda, then it would be discarded, or at least downgraded in terms of military, economic and diplomatic support.

The Obedience Culture, & the Death of the Mind – & Toward a New World by Arthur Silber

At the beginning of February, I wrote about the profoundly heroic stand taken by Lt. Ehren Watada, in “You’re Either With the Resistance — or With the Murderers.” I said that Lt. Watada “is one of those rare heroes who has said, ‘No’ — and he is prepared to go to jail for four years for his refusal.” So part of what happened this past week is wonderful news:

First Lt. Ehren Watada, the first commissioned officer to refuse deployment to Iraq, won what his backers are calling a “huge victory” in court Thursday.

US District Court Judge Benjamin Settle ruled the military cannot put Watada on trial a second time unless it can prove such a trial would not violate the US Constitution’s prohibition against “double jeopardy.”

In February, Lt. Watada’s first court martial ended in a mistrial just before he was to take the stand in his own defense. Many observers believe the judge, Lt. Col. John Head, ordered a mistrial in that case because he was worried that Lt. Watada’s testimony would lead to him being found not guilty of “missing [troops] movement” and “conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman.”

Collusion Course: Dems Play Impeachment Farce as Republic Burns by Chris Floyd

I was planning to write on the malevolent farce played out in Congress yesterday, when the Democratic leadership floundered around in a sweaty panic trying to prevent Dennis Kuchinich’s impeachment resolution from even being discussed, much less voted upon. But Arthur Silber is already on the case, as we’ll see below.

Silber also makes a broader point whose stinging truth should – but won’t – spread across the “progressive” movement. As Silber notes, the Republicans proudly champion torture, Hitlerite aggressive war, and iron-fisted domestic tyranny; they think such things are good. The Democrats, in contrast, say they oppose all this, that such things are evil. Yet they do not and will not act to fight against these things. Given this undeniable fact, Silber poses the question:

So which is worse? Those who support evil, but insist they believe it is good? Or those who support evil while claiming, at least some of the time, that they actually know it is evil?

This is, as Silber notes, a distinction without much difference in these darkening times; the first order of business is not to parse partisan characteristics but to halt the onslaught of evil that is emanating from and being exacerbated by both parties. But the formulation does help us see the Democratic “leaders” more clearly. When you support them, you are supporting a knowing collusion with evil. If that’s the kind of country you want — well, you’ve got it. If not – what are you going to do about it?

Excerpts from The Barren, Deadly Wasteland that Is Now Our Life:

Let’s be clear about the stakes [of the impeachment maneuvers] here. First, if anyone in Washington recognized the scope of the worldwide catastrophe that would almost certainly result from an attack on Iran, they would realize that impeachment of both Bush and Cheney is the strongest means of trying to prevent that eventuality…Second, the long list of indisputable crimes committed by the Bush administration — aggressive, criminal war, explicit and systematic adoption of torture as a normalized means of warfare and of government policy, rendition, secret prisons, and all the rest — demands impeachment. Impeachment is the least that key members of this administration deserve.

The vanishingly small number of Americans who genuinely desire liberty and peace, and who also understand what those great values require in terms of both political theory and political reality, have desperately grasped at any sign, no matter how miniscule, that a sufficient number of their fellow citizens might awake in time to prevent the ultimate catastrophe. There is no reason of any significance to find such signs any longer.

Americans now reside in the Land of the Living Dead. For the moment, the dim, blurred forms of a constitutional republic remain, but they are entirely empty and drained of life and vitality. We continue to go through the meaningless rituals of elections, many of us trying to convince ourselves that one party might be even a slight improvement over the other. As I pointed out before last fall’s election, such hopes rely on willful self-delusion and an all-encompassing ignorance of history. As I have also said more than once, my estimate of how awful the Democrats’ performance would be even if they took back both the House and the Senate — and it was very awful — has proved, in the event, to be laughably generous.

Please note — and I underscore this point at least five times for emphasis — that I absolutely do not include those individuals who so tirelessly work for Democratic electoral victory among those Americans who truly value liberty or peace. The criminal who currently resides in the White House and his fellow gang members may have taken the lead in destroying the remnants of our freedoms — but they were supported and enabled every step of the way by the “opposition” party. From the Patriot Act, through both Authorizations for the Use of Military Force, and on to the monstrous Military Commissions Act, the Democrats offered enthusiastic support for the metastasizing authoritarian state or, when they meekly attempted to slow the tide, they fought in the manner of a skeletally thin imitation of a human being, about to fall over and finally expire due to a fatal lack of moral and spiritual nourishment.

Will No One Rid Me of This Meddlesome Man? by Arthur Silber

by Arthur Silber

June 26, 2007

When last we visited Joshua Muravchik in November of 2006, we came to understand how wildly comedic advanced dementia could be. We learned that the neoconservatives are depised only because they are so beautiful and approach as close to perfection as is possible to imperfect Man. Their ideas are good and true, and universal in their applicability. Oh, the neoconservatives may have made a few mistakes, but such is life. And perhaps most importantly, we must:

BOMB IRAN! BOMB IRAN! BOMB IRAN!
