Cosmic Irony [is] the idea that fate, destiny, or a god controls and toys with human hopes and expectations. It also [encompasses] the belief that the universe is so large and man so small that the universe is indifferent to the plight of man.

Mordechai Vanunu was born on 13 October 1954 in Marrakesh, Morocco. From east Jerusalem in 2005, he told me: Continue reading

Amnesty International has accused the Israeli authorities of subjecting jailed nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment by holding him in solitary confinement.

The 56-year-old, who spent 18 years in prison for revealing details of the country’s nuclear arsenal to a UK newspaper in 1986, was sent back to jail for three months on 23 May on charges of contact with a foreign national, and almost immediately placed in solitary confinement.

[…]

“Mordechai Vanunu should not be in prison at all, let alone be held in solitary confinement in a unit intended for violent criminals,” said Malcolm Smart, Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East Programme.

Eighty-nine-year old Journalist Helen Thomas has taken a lot of heat for daring to address the fact that any Jew without any historical connection to Israel is encouraged to settle-as in colonize-upon legally owned Palestinian land.

I learned about, Aliyah, which means ‘going up,’ during my first of seven trips to Israel and occupied Palestine in June 2005 from an American Jewess who had taken the deal and she informed me: Continue reading

TRIBUTE TO THE PEOPLE OF GAZA

By Mairead Maguire –  Nobel Peace Laureate

I never cease to be amazed at the power of the human spirit to survive. During my last visit to Gaza in October 2008 I was amazed and deeply moved by the power of the people I witnessed. In a triumph of hope over adversity and tremendous suffering, love still abides.

On May 24, 2010, the international press blew the doors wide open regarding President Shimon Peres’ “secret” offer to sell nuclear warheads to the South African Apartheid regime in 1975.

It was reported that PW Botha, South Africa’s defense minister asked Shimon Peres-who was then Israel’s defense minister-for nuclear warheads.

Peres offered them “in three sizes” which are understood as conventional, chemical and nuclear weapons!

On May 11, 2010, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that Mordechai Vanunu, will “serve a three-month jail sentence handed to him by Jerusalem District Court and not community service.” [1]

Vanunu is scheduled to return to jail on May 23, 2010, because the ‘justices’ refused his offer to do community service in occupied east Jerusalem as they do not view that side of town to be a part of their community.

On May 12, 2010, AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL urged the Israeli government not to re-imprison Mordechai Vanunu.

Vanunu was also convicted for traveling the four miles from Jerusalem to Bethlehem when he hoped to attend Christmas Eve mass at the Church of the Nativity, his first Christmas after being released from 18 years in jail [most of it in solitary] on April 21, 2004.

The NPT/Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, was created in 1968, and maintains that nuclear weapons proliferation can only be curtailed if nuclear countries move toward disarmament.

The purpose of the NPT Review, which happens every five years, is to reaffirm the signatories’ commitments to the treaty’s three purposes: disarmament, nonproliferation, and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Countries without nuclear weapons that signed the NPT, such as Iran, were promised full support in developing other nuclear technologies in exchange for renouncing nuclear weapons. The five nuclear powers that signed the NPT agreed to get rid of their nuclear weapons.

Anyone with a modicum of sense knows what this post is about. We all feel a bit angry with Iran for running a clandestine nuclear facility. If you took this issue and didn’t involve anything else into it, sure, tight sanctions may be just what are needed. It’s unfortunate that our government works that way. We see the United States, time after time, reacting to world events instead of looking at the big picture. Reacting to events leaves us being wrapped around the axle every time. Too many crises will leave us little time to forge ahead with our own agenda, whatever that may be.

And So This Was Christmas By Eileen Fleming (Vanunu)

On Christmas Eve evening I picked up my mail and opened up a card from Jerusalem sent to me by Mordechai Vanunu. He made me laugh out loud, for he addressed it to: “Eileen Flaming” not Fleming, which is my actual name.

But, upon reflection, I think Vanunu has renamed me well; for I am flaming over the hypocrisy and injustice of empire and apathy and ignorance of good Christians who have no eyes to see, ears to hear, or hearts that bleed for the poor and oppressed in the Holy land and the entire Middle East.
