We’ve all heard about the “Petitions” of “Scientists” who disagree with Climate Science. This sordid little episode in the history of climate denial points up once again the fundamental dishonesty of the climate denial industry.

It seems to be agreed among deniers, that there is a warming happening on other planets in the solar system. And not just one or two planets.
It is considered climate denier gospel that all the other planets are warming, and that this is proof that some kind of solar activity is warming the whole system.
Let’s look at the evidence.

Could the scientists at Nasa, the National academy of science, the American Meteorological Society, and every professional scientific organization on the planet really have been so silly as to miss something this obvious?

the point of the video is that for deniers, AGW does not exist, and the argument is made that the measured warming is merely an artifact of the heat island effect – which is real, but not the reason for the elevated global temperatures.
The proof is that measured temperatures are rising fastest over non- urban, ocean and arctic areas.
The film does not dispute that things are warmer in urban areas. It disputes the
denial of AGW based on heat island.
Thanks for explaining that, Greenman.
“The ‘Urban Heat Island’ Crock” documentary is not helpful to the cause; and i believe anyone who is a proponent of the dangers of Global Warming (as i am), should not use it as help in proving “debate points”.
Some of the data there is useful, but regarding the concept that there is a Urban Heat Island… I am afraid this effect is quite true, and very apparent.. Thus rather silly and dangerous to our credibility to deny. Anyone who watches local weather reports can see this for themselves: A 2 or 3 degree increase of local temperature over densely populated areas and cities (even at night). This comes from mostly from Albedo (differences in the sunlight reflexion / heat retention of urban building materials verses grass and trees.
In the past, i have successfully used the heat island effect as a means of proving to knee-jerk deniers of GW, that IT REALLY IS possible for Man to influence the climate of our planet… This is an important point for us to make with many who scoff at the possibility; as it then opens the door to acceptance of climate change from heavy industry, fossil fueled vehicles, mining, and other man-made endeavors.
So i do not believe such a tactic is profitable to our cause. Everyone can see for themselves that such urban heat islands exist. And it is well known that the percent of land that has been “urbanized” has grown exponentially in the last decades; as populations grow and more countries become “developed”.
Showing a map at the global scale (as in the vid) would never show such small localized hot-spots.. And there is great question as to whether the heat island actually make it up to the upper atmosphere (which appears to be what is recorded on that map).
However, one thing important to remember about Climate Change is that ALL heat entering the system adds to the total climate.
So don’t get me wrong here, it is a question of “tactics” not philosophy. I applaud most of the author’s efforts: I just believe, from spending a lot of time and effort arguing and debating this important subject for many years…. That we should use the “Heat Island” effect as a “plus” (proof of Man’s effect on the planet); and not try to deny something everyone can see daily by simply watching their local weather report.
Good points, jibbguy, thanks.
