“Turkey has international responsibilities that extend beyond its immediate neighborhood. […]

We do not believe that Turkey’s decision to abstain […] [from voting on the IAEA resolution against Iran’s nuclear work] last November helped [our shared goal of a peaceful diplomatic resolution of this issue]. […]

[W]e hope that Turkey will join the broad group of nations in the UN Security Council who are seeking to hold Iran to its IAEA and Security Council obligations.”

[US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasian affairs Philip H. Gordon, annual Sakip Sabanci Lecture at the Brookings Institution, Washington, 17 March 2010 ]  [1]

“ [A]s we await the results of the [2008 US presidential] election, there is no doubt that the United States will continue to bring the most pressing issues facing international security to the UN Security Council. It is in that context that we welcome Turkey’s recent election for a two-year term on the council. […]

Perhaps most urgent among those issues is Iran’s continuing defiance of the council’s will regarding its nuclear program. […] We look forward to continued close work with Turkey to maintain the international focus on this issue.”

[US Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson (2005-2008), 4 November 2008]  [2]
