Rebels have reportedly entered Tripoli from the west as fighting in Libya appears to be intensifying, with some claims that hundreds have been killed over the weekend. It’s also believed that major clashes have taken place at the capital’s Mitiga airbase.

Dr. Franklin Lamb, from Americans for Middle East Peace, is in Tripoli and says the situation has become increasingly volatile.

Libyan rebels say they’re pushing on towards Tripoli and claim they’re now around 30 kilometers from the capital. There have also been reports of sporadic violence within Tripoli itself – but many people on the ground there say the situation is much calmer than those reports suggest. Lizzie Pheelan is an independent journalist in Tripoli who says that false accounts of what’s happening have served only to stir up the conflict.

Rebels have reportedly entered Tripoli from the west as fighting in Libya appears to be intensifying. Some estimates put the death toll from this weekend alone in the hundreds – with around a thousand injured. It’s also believed that major clashes have seen the rebels capture the capital’s Mitiga airbase. Opposition forces also claim to have freed prisoners locked up during the uprising against Gaddafi’s regime.

Reports of tracer bullets and explosions over the Libyan capital have caused many to believe it’s the beginning of the end for Colonel Gaddafi’s stronghold. Political analyst Mahdi Nazemroaya who’s also in Tripoli, says some sporadic attacks may actually be happening, but in his opinion they are part of psychological warfare.

From 1.40am this Morning – It seems sometimes he is addressing the rebels, and sometimes Loyalists. But it is a pretty emotive speech, and I recorded my voice over in a place with a little backround sound.

The text is not edited – Though I left out a couple of sentences in the voice over.

1300 innocent civilians killed in Tripoli in the last 11 hours + 5000 injured. Nonstop bombings and 3 Apache gunship firing their mini-cannons constantly are the real killers. The gangs of Al Qaida are burning houses, looting shops and kidnapping every woman in sight. Any prominent supporter of Ghadafi was targeted and their houses attacked first. The number of gangs have been increasing because they are coming in from the sea in small NATO craft directed by the Special Forces of all the aggressor nations.

Rebels are claiming they are in control of most of the Libyan capital Tripoli, although state TV is still airing pro-Gaddafi programmes. Heavy fighting has been reported near the Libyan leader’s residence. Earlier three of his sons were said to have been arrested. Following a night of chaos in the capital, crowds were seen in the city’s central square with people waving revolutionary flags. Dr. Franklin Lamb – the director of Americans for Middle East Peace who was shot by sniper on Sunday- says Gaddafi may be preparing a massive counter-attack.
