BREAKING: Supreme Court Effectively Ends Abortion Access in Much of the United States
June 24, 2022
Shortly after 10am E.T. this morning, in a devastating decision, the Supreme Court officially and effectively ended abortion access for people in about half of the United States.
The court’s ruling was 6-3, with Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan dissenting. “With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,” they wrote.
The decision in the case known as Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health reverses long-settled laws established in the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade decision, and also Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
The majority opinion in Dobbs is virtually identical to the draft leaked last month. After the leak, we interviewed law professor Michele Goodwin, author of “Policing the Womb: Invisible Women and the Criminalization of Motherhood.” She described how the U.S. has historically endangered and denied essential health services to Black and Brown women, and calls new abortion restrictions “the new Jane Crow,” warning that they will further criminalize reproductive health and encourage medical professionals to breach their patients’ confidentiality and report self-administered abortions to law enforcement.

Expand the Supreme Court!
June 24, 2022
Petition to the President and Congress:
We urge you to immediately expand the number of seats on the U.S. Supreme Court by at least four, and quickly appoint new justices to fill those seats. The future of our democracy and our basic rights depends on it!
The Supreme Court followed through on their threat and just overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminate abortion rights for millions of Americans. That’s horrific. And Clarence Thomas signaled they plan to go even further.
In his own concurring opinion, Thomas said the Court should “reconsider” rulings that made birth control legal, protected marriage equality, and decriminalized homosexual sex.1
We have to fight back NOW. We must show this Supreme Court there are consequences to extremism, prevent them from doing any more damage, and restore abortion rights for everyone.
Congress has the power to add seats to the Supreme Court and fix a broken institution that has been captured by the extremist far-right. There’s no time to lose. Will you add your name in this urgent moment?
Sign the petition: Congress must add seats to the Supreme Court to restore abortion and protect other basic rights!
This is all happening because the far right has succeeded in its decades-long campaign to secure a supermajority on the Supreme Court. Six out of nine Supreme Court justices have ties to the Federalist Society, a cabal of right-wing jurists backed by corporate funders such as the Koch Brothers.
The result is an extremist Supreme Court that is imposing a radical agenda on the country with stunning speed. Earlier the Supreme Court eviscerated gun control, eroded church-state separation, and undermined the Miranda ruling.
Congress should have acted in May when the draft decision by Justice Samuel Alito, which stated Roe v. Wade would be overturned. Had Congress voted to expand the Supreme Court then, we might have avoided today’s catastrophe. Congress did not act. And we see the consequences. We cannot fail again.
Congress can pass legislation to rebalance the Supreme Court now, before the November election. It’s constitutional, it’s happened before, and it’s the only way to stop the radical right takeover of our courts and our country!
