Done Deal? Ukraine signs trade agreement with EU

Ukraine has entered a trade agreement with the EU – the very deal that started events that saw the previous administration toppled and ultimately led to the ongoing bloody stand-off in the country’s east. President Petro Poroshenko signed the association pact in Brussels and says he believes this is the way to carry out the will of the nation.
Those in Ukraine supporting the association agreement with the EU have high hopes for the deal. But not everything pro-European Ukrainians are hoping for is on the table right now.

David: First of all, it was Gorbachev who sold out the people of the Soviet Union with his “good intentions.”
Yeltsin pushed the “privatization” process along until the country was in financial ruin, except for a few select business people who became billionaire and millionaire oligarchs, screwing over the working-class and retirees, with huge health and social costs for their insatiable greed.
Putin, whatever his flaws, and we all have some, is the proverbial “knight in shinning armor” trying to right the wrongs of his predecessors. Couple that with the questionable goals of NGO’s in Russia today, and you can see what he and the government are up against.

It’s a tricky business Frank, to read Gorby’s communist reform programme with certainty. He may indeed have been Moscow-centric and unpopular in the regions for any number of reasons, whilst extravagantly feted abroad… but glasnost and perestroika were significant and desperately needed initiatives that could have brought about a far more productive and progressive federated socialist community.
He inaugurated an epoch of pan-Eurasian cultural exchange and positive interaction, that was a remarkable opportunity, following the wind down of Soviet era involvement in Afghanistan ~ and he was within an ace of gaining free access to the Indian Ocean; but was duped and misled & then totally betrayed by Western plotting and vacuous assurances. The prospect of a successful “commonwealth” of “sovereign” Soviet republics posed a huge threat to the hegemonic ambitions of the US in Central Asia.
My conviction is that his great error was not to court Ankara and build a strongly integrated Muslim coalition, but to solicit the “friendship” of the Vatican hierarchy, dominated by reactionary cold-war Polish/US ambitions. The consequences were catastrophic, and we are still living with those devastating outcomes.

Thanks for the link, davidifos. He has quite a collection of documents from the Afghanistan imbroglio. If I remember correctly, the Afghan government at that time, asked the Soviets to come in to help fight against the Islamic fanatics which wanted to topple the “pro-communist government in Kabul. The Red Army didn’t “invade” Afghanistan, as the West usually infers, making those “evil Russians” war-mongering, in their quest to conquer the world.
I agree with you that glastnost and perestroika were significant and desperately needed to calm the US and the USSR, but still, didn’t Gorbachev and the Politboro see the bigger picture of the American power-play for weakening the Soviets? But then again, and during that period, who ever thought the “North Atlantic Treaty (Terrorist) Organization” would expand their borders and absorb (with $$$) “Eastern & Central Asian” countries, formerly part of the USSR?
I certainly didn’t, and was waiting for the “peace dividend” upon the breakup of the Soviet Union.
On Ankara, I’m not so sure. The Turks play both sides against the middle, contradicting themselves from time to time.
On Poland, didn’t Gorbechev et al see the grand scheme of the Russian-hating Brezinski, hand-picked by Uncle Sam (starting with Carter) to do all he could (diplomatically) to weaken Russia?
Ah, the Vatican … from the folks who asked German Catholics to support Hitler and the Nazis whom they thought were better than those “god-less” communists.
That’s all in the past. What matters now is this very moment.

Pretty inflammatory stuff ~ RT sure is ramping up the psychological propaganda here, Mind you, old hands say that to be effective propaganda must contain a high percentage of fact, not just a bunch of outright lies, something the US state dept seems to have overlooked.
The key is emphasis and selection. So what do we deduce from this media blitzkrieg?
The main message is blatant gangsterism unmasked, and we’d be foolish not to recognize this violent signature of imperial power throughout history so obviously in evidence here. The difference is that today in Europe, we expect something more evolved than this grotesque depravity ~ extreme brute force and ignorance unleashed on our doorstep.

Controlling the “Far East” has been America’s envious ambition since the C19th. What is truly remarkable, is that these US PNACkers simply don’t seem to be conversant with actual history, nor have properly even considered the Asian experiences of the plundering ancient European regimes.
Of course this occult US campaign will not be fought out in the Middle Kingdom itself, but in Africa. At whose expense one might reasonably ask? And with what consequences, spiritually, morally and ecologically?
Unspeakable horror beyond reckoning is only an Obama wink away.
